After you submit a citizenship application, the Citizenship Office assesses it and contacts you if information is missing or a case officer needs more detail. Processing time varies because some applications can be assessed with more automated checks than others.
How to check your application status
Govt.nz directs applicants to the online citizenship service. Choose Continue saved application and sign in using RealMe to check progress.
Why one application can take longer than another
Manual checks, unusual identity or movement records, character questions, special circumstances, or requests for more information can all increase processing time. Comparing your case with a friend's application is therefore not a reliable prediction.
If DIA asks for more information
Respond carefully and within any deadline provided. If you do not understand what is being requested, contact the Citizenship Office rather than guessing or sending unrelated documents.
Can you travel while the application is processing?
The public after-you-apply guidance does not state that an ordinary overseas trip automatically cancels a citizenship application. However, your circumstances can still matter to residence, intention and contactability. Keep your contact details current and speak to the Citizenship Office if your travel involves a significant move or affects your immigration status.
Withdrawing and refunds
The Citizenship Regulations provide for a 67% refund of the fee paid if an application for a grant of citizenship is withdrawn before initial processing is completed. No refund is payable under that provision after initial processing is complete. If a citizenship application is declined after assessment, do not assume a refund applies.
