For most adult applicants, the safest starting point is that New Zealand citizenship by grant is a five-year resident pathway. Govt.nz says most people need to have been living as a New Zealand resident for at least the last five years, and the presence test is counted backwards from the day you apply.
The standard rule has more than one part
The numerical presence test requires at least 240 eligible days in each 12-month period and 1,350 eligible days across the five years. That does not replace the separate requirement that most people have been living as a resident for at least the last five years.
Why an estimated date can appear before a five-year anniversary
A day-count algorithm can sometimes find a numerical window that reaches 240 and 1,350 before a simple five-year anniversary. That is why this website labels its output as a presence estimate and shows the five-year resident anniversary separately. Do not treat an earlier numerical date as permission to apply.
Are there exceptions?
Yes, but they are specific. Children and Samoan citizens can have different requirements, and the Minister can consider exceptional circumstances in rare cases. Those are not shortcuts that a general calculator can safely assess.
