Submitting a citizenship application does not turn your current passport or immigration documents into a New Zealand passport. While your application is being processed, Govt.nz specifically tells applicants to make sure their current passport or travel document remains valid, including any relevant visas issued by Immigration New Zealand.
Keep your travel document valid
If your current passport or travel document is due to expire within the next year, the Government says you may need to renew it in case of urgent travel. Citizenship and passport applications are separate processes.
What about an ordinary overseas trip?
The public after-you-apply page does not state that an ordinary trip automatically cancels a citizenship application. However, your application is still assessed against the citizenship requirements and your circumstances can matter. If travel involves a long absence, a move overseas, changed resident status, or something material to your application, contact the Citizenship Office rather than relying on a general article.
If you are already approved but waiting for a ceremony
Govt.nz asks people to contact the citizenship ceremonies team if they plan to travel before their ceremony takes place. Remember that, where a ceremony is required, approval alone is not yet the final citizenship step.
