Travel-day boundaries look simple until two calculators disagree by one or two days. The official citizenship requirement is based on days when you were physically present in New Zealand with the required resident status, but the public guidance does not publish a detailed rule for every partial arrival or departure day.
The conservative convention used here
NZ Citizenship Check deliberately treats the departure date as the first day outside New Zealand and the return date as the first day back in New Zealand. The proposed application date is the endpoint of the five-year look-back and is not counted as one of the preceding five-year days.
Why this can differ from another calculator
If another independent calculator counts a departure day as present in New Zealand, its result can be a day earlier. A different treatment of the application-date boundary can create another one-day difference. That does not make either independent calculator the official DIA result.
Why we prefer the cautious version
A date-only form cannot know whether you left New Zealand at 1:00am or 11:00pm, nor can it see the official movement record used in a government assessment. This website therefore chooses a slightly more cautious estimate rather than suggesting that someone apply too early.
