For most adult citizenship-by-grant applicants, the standard is practical rather than academic: you need to be able to hold a basic conversation in English.
If English is not your first language
Govt.nz says you should include evidence that you can speak English. Accepted examples include school certificates or reports, IELTS evidence, an employer reference letter, university academic records, or university qualifications.
Is there always an English test?
No single test is described as mandatory for everyone. If a case officer has questions about your English, you may be asked to attend an interview. The Citizenship Office then assesses whether the requirement is met.
Children and Samoan applicants
Different rules can apply. Children aged 13 and under do not need to meet the English requirement, while children aged 14 and 15 do. Samoan applicants should check the special requirements that apply to them.
