The Citizenship Office accepts passport-style photos. The image must be recent, clear and show your face correctly. A poor photo is a wonderfully avoidable way to slow down an otherwise complete application.
Core photo rules
- less than six months old;
- only you in the image;
- clear, sharp and in focus;
- head and shoulders visible;
- face looking directly at the camera;
- eyes open and visible; and
- neutral expression with your mouth closed.
Do not use a selfie
Govt.nz specifically says selfies are not accepted because they change how your face looks. Ask another person to take the image.
Online versus paper
For an online application you need one photo saved as a JPEG. For a paper or in-person application, you need two identical photos printed on photo-quality paper.
