New Zealand citizenship by grant can be applied for online, by post or in person. The citizenship requirements do not become easier or harder because of the route you choose, but the practical preparation is different.
Online application
Govt.nz says online applicants should have a RealMe login, a device with internet access and a camera, an identity referee, digital copies of the required photo and documents, and a credit or debit card. The online process can include an identity check using your device camera.
Paper or in-person application
For paper or in-person applications, Govt.nz asks for a completed application form, a witness, original documents and printed photos. If you post an application, original documents should be sent in a tracked courier bag and the Citizenship Office says they are couriered back after about four to six weeks.
Referee and witness are not interchangeable labels
The online route uses an identity referee. Paper and in-person routes use a witness who completes the relevant declaration. Check the current official preparation instructions before asking someone to help, because the eligibility rules matter.
Which route should you choose?
If you are comfortable uploading clear digital copies and using RealMe, online is usually the simplest operational route. Paper or in-person can be useful where the online service is not suitable or where a special application type requires a particular form.
